Blue Book or Facebook
In the early 1900s, information that was relatively important for the masses were printed on small paperback pocket books called Little Blue Books. During that time, it was one of the most widely used form of sharing information amongst the lower classes (and perhaps even the higher ones as well). Vast amounts of topics traveled through the populace for a mere few cents, making them a highly used commodity. Therefore, knowledge was in high demand, and everyone wished for even the smallest amount of general education. In today's modern world, this desire is higher, if not amplified.Though , we don't have Little Blue Books anymore. Then what do we have? Well, as strange and alien as it seems, we have Facebook. Think about it. Most of the world is connected by this single site, and most - if not all - organizations, businesses, and relevant individuals have their own pages. By using Facebook, the people of the modern world have the same chance to obtain information as they did back in the day.
The internet has taken the Blue Book way of spreading information and accelerated it to heights never before expected in the history of humans. Blue Books were started in order to inform the uninformed, but today if you want information you can just connect and search away. Facebook brings the spreading of information to a personal level. Facebook was started so people could connect and communicate better over the internet. People go out of there way to add everybody to their friends list. People are also more likely to share information that they like with people they are friends with. This means that if you read an article from a newspaper online, or read some poetry that you like, it is very easy to share this with your friends. Literature is moving to an increasingly digital world and it has to get to people in new ways than before and Facebook could play a very important role.
With a simple red notification, you can see what your friend's recently found interesting and shared on their timelines. In a way, its like suggesting a good book to a friend (or, should I say Blue Book?). Seeing as we humans are curious naturally, the idea of expanding our knowledge is far to enticing when it's blatantly plastered right in front of us, on one of the most highly used websites to date. Though its accessibility may be heightened in comparison to the Blue Books (merely by the barrier of a few cents in payment), Facebook has replaced the small, simple pocket books in our own modern day and age. Information, in the end, is the key!
