Facebook: The Next Generation of Communication
by Sarah Moores
Much like how blue books were a way to educate and bring people together at their time, face book is doing the same in today’s fast paced world. Bluebooks were not only a way to connect others but also a way to help educate society on topics that they might not ordinarily be familiarized with. They were also a way for society to share and tell information of any sort. In today’s world of technology that is constantly changing as well as persistently being on the go, Facebook is a great way to bring all types of literature and information together in an easy accessible way.
Not only is Facebook a great way to communicate with other people we may or may not know, it is also a great way to communicate and share information. For example a class that you might be taking; say you were to have a question about the text but have no one’s phone number from your class. There is either most likely a group already created for your school where you would be able to find someone from your class and message or ‘friend’ them or there may even possibly be a group formed specifically for that class you are in. For those who are not concerned with connecting with classmates there are many other ways to find people you may know from a certain location or high school. After finding people you may know there are many ways to share new information. By liking or friending a page such as the New York Times, your local news or even your favorite author you have the ability to read what that page posts. After reading your choice of articles or stories, Facebook automatically will let your friends of Facebook know what you have read. This allows them to read the same page you read and comment on what you have read if they would like. By giving the option to not only read what others are reading but also comment and share these articles I believe that Facebook is taking it one step further than Bluebooks ever did.
Although it is nowhere near difficult to spend hours on the Facebook site without even noticing, it can be beneficial. This is true especially when education is involved. Like mentioned previously, you are able to connect with your school and also with individuals in the classes you might be taking. Facebook was initially created to be centered around Universities and its students. It has come along way and is now available to all sorts of people including students in college, high school, middle school, parents, business’, newspapers, products and even the occasional grandparents. Not all of these types of users are spending their time on Facebook for educational reasons but they are using it to connect with society in one way or another. In a way I believe this is what the Little Blue Books had in mind for the people of their time.
Haldeman Julius created the blue books to show the different aspects of literature. He wanted not only the educated but also common people to be able to understand what was happening in the world around them, along with having a wide range of ideas and viewpoints about these different subjects. Facebook has in a way taken over this idea and expanded it in a whole new way. Despite some controversy it really is a valuable tool if used properly. It is not only helpful for students but also helpful for those uninformed and out of touch with society. Another thing that Julius wanted was to be able to reach as many people as he could with these Little Blue Books. He may have done the best he could at the time reaching thousands in the United States but with the technology we have today Facebook is reaching a much larger audience with millions is several countries. Facebook has come a long way since it first appeared in 2003 as a way to rate students on their looks to becoming the social media website of its time. But even though Facebook may have a more reachable audience the Little Blue Books will be remembered and forever be a part of history. Both Bluebooks and Facebook opened many minds and helped to share many different opinions and views that will never be erased from the minds of those that read it and the impact that they both had on the public.
